Pôr-do-Sol, a restaurant in Alvor (Algarve)

In Alvor, one of the most popular restaurants is Pôr-do-Sol. I go there often with my family.

Clean, with decent food, reasonable prices, and a fantastic staff, the place has been a hit since the eighties, especially among British and German tourists.

Interesting suggestion, Damas. By the way, what does the name mean?

Good question. The restaurant’s name means “sunset” (sol = sun) in Portuguese.

Before or after sunset, come with me now to see the restaurant.

Staff & Atmosphere

People feel a family atmosphere, with a decoration that looks like a dear “grandma’s house.”

The staff is competent, kind, lovely and even funny, talking to the customers and sometimes making them laugh. Cândido, Rui, and other servers become our new friends.

Cândido (looking at the camera) is the soul of the restaurant. So is Rui, at the left, cutting a piece of meat.

The food

The proprietors like to keep the kitchen exposed to the clients, allowing everyone to see how clean and organized it is.

Steak and fish come in the most popular meals. And I suppose you will choose fish because fish and seafood are a tradition in the local gastronomy. For example, consider trying the popular cataplana and a part of fried shrimps with garlic and pepper.

Before the main course, do not dare (oh, no!) to ignore the delicious olives they serve, especially the black ones. You know: Portuguese olives are the best in the world, so you can’t miss the opportunity. The taste is even better while we drink the great Portuguese beer — and I recommend Super Bock.

I presume you will enjoy the dessert too. Sometimes, a staff member uses fire to prepare it before the client’s table. The cooking turns out to be a show, and people love to take pictures.

Damas, what about vegetarians and vegans?

Oh, well. If you are a vegetarian, there will be only two simple options on the menu, and, honestly, they are not good. If you are vegan, there will be no choice. Sadly, restaurants in the Algarve rarely pay attention to this.

If you’re going to the Algarve in Summer, book a table in advance.

Before you go

Have you ever seen an almond tree? They are abundant in the Algarve, coloring landscapes with white flowers.

There is an almond tree in front of the restaurant, so this is one more chance you can’t miss.

Have a delightful meal.
